But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
If you Google “How many times was Jesus mentioned in the Old Testament?”, you will be told that the name Jesus is not explicitly mentioned in the Old Testament, but that scholars have identified over 400 prophecies, appearances, or foreshadowing of Christ in the Old Testament, and possibly as many as 574 verses that contain direct personal messianic predictions.
The Old Testament predicted that a Savior would die for our sins in Isaiah 53. This is an incredible chapter which describes many details of the crucifixion of Jesus hundreds of years before Jesus was born.
Archeology tells us that Isaiah 53 was definitely written before the birth of Jesus. The Great Isaiah Scroll, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in 1947, has been dated to 125 to 100 BC, and contains all 66 chapters of Isaiah. There is no doubt that it was written before Jesus was born, and yet it describes his death accurately!
