Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24
Most Christians work in the secular sector. How do we serve Christ when doing a secular job? We are commanded to glorify God in all that we do which involves Matthew 22:37-39:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
We are commanded to work hard and strive for excellence in all that we do, while keeping God’s commandments. There is no conflict of interest here, as long as your job does not require you to break any of God’s commands. Recognizing God’s will in some situations may require a lot of prayer. Since most of us work with other people, we will encounter sinful behavior in the workplace. It is our job to love our neighbor, not to commend sinful behavior. We must monitor our own responses to others, as well as our own behavior prayerfully. A Christian will need to ask God for guidance daily in all areas of their life. Our response to others, and how we treat them in general, may be the best witness we have. Building good relationships is the best way to find an opportunity to share the Gospel.
Lord, I pray that my interactions with others in all settings will be righteous, and lead to opportunities to share Your Word.
