“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”  Philippians 4:8

Do you ever think about what you think about?  You are thinking about something all of the time, even when you are asleep.  If you are not careful, you will spend a lot of time thinking about things that are not profitable, or even absolutely sinful.

The verse above tells you that you have the ability to choose what you think about.  The first step in choosing the right things to think about is to become aware of what you think about naturally.  This is part of the self-examined life of a Christian.  As you begin to examine what you are thinking about, you may be surprised and probably dismayed, or even embarrassed.

You may also find that you don’t want to stop thinking some of your sinful thoughts.  Ask God to help you stop the sinful thoughts, and help you to get into the habit of thinking thoughts that are honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent.  Much of what we think about is habit, and you will have to stop yourself from thinking about some things and redirect your thinking to other things often at first.  You will get better at choosing to think about the right things in time, but you will always have to be vigilant about what you are thinking about on this side of eternity.
